About Matt

Matt Gaffney has been a professional crossword puzzle writer for 17 years, during which he's written almost 5,000 crosswords. His puzzles have appeared in Billboard, The Daily Beast, New York Magazine, The New York Times, Slate, The Washington Post, and Wine Spectator.

In addition to these daily puzzles, Matt currently writes a weekly current events-themed crossword for The Week, a fortnightly contest crossword for The Wall Street Journal, and a monthly Sunday-sized puzzle for Washingtonian. He also writes his own weekly crossword contest at www.xwordcontest.com.

Matt is the author of many books of and about crosswords, including The Complete Idiot's Guide to Crossword Puzzles and Word Games and the 2006 narrative book Gridlock. His articles on crosswords have appeared in many publications including The American Prospect, MentalFloss.com, Slate, and The Weekly Standard.

Matt was born in 1972 and lives in Staunton, Virginia, with his wife, Kristin, who is a nurse.
